In the heart of Parksville, a special dog named Benny is making a significant difference in the lives of seniors. As a beloved therapy dog, Benny regularly visits Trillium Lodge, a long-term care home, where his gentle presence brings joy and comfort to the residents.
Benny, a stunning German Shepherd/Leonberger crossbreed, has been part of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program since 2023. Known for his calm demeanor and striking multi-colored coat, Benny’s visits have become a highlight for many at Trillium Lodge. His owner, Don, guides Benny through these visits, where the dog is often seen quietly sitting or standing as residents pet him and shower him with affection.
“Take your time folks, but not too long, my people await,” Benny seems to say, as he patiently interacts with the residents. His gentle nature is particularly appreciated by those who enjoy his calm presence without the energetic antics that come with some dogs.
The therapy dog program, part of St. John Ambulance, includes dogs like Benny who visit hospitals, schools, and senior care facilities. These visits provide numerous emotional benefits, offering companionship and a sense of calm to those in need.
Benny’s breed combination contributes to his serene temperament. German Shepherds are known for their versatility and intelligence, while Leonbergers, a cross between Newfoundland and St. Bernard breeds, are renowned for their gentle nature. This blend creates the perfect therapy dog, one that is both affectionate and composed.
Benny’s owner, Don, is also preparing to introduce a second dog into the therapy dog program—a golden retriever with a more energetic personality. However, Benny’s calm and collected presence is exactly what some seniors need, providing them with a soothing and loving companion.
Born on March 1, 2021, Benny loves long walks, car rides, and watching TV. When he’s not visiting residents, Benny enjoys sitting on his deck, surveying his yard, and soaking up the sunshine. His contributions to the therapy dog program are a reminder of the simple yet profound ways animals can enrich our lives.
In this month’s column, we also honor the memory of little Molly and offer our condolences to the Morgan family, who have been a part of the dog community. Benny’s story is a testament to the incredible bond between humans and animals, and the positive impact they can have on those who need it most.
