As a college freshman, I was dating my high school sweetheart, who at the time was living in his mother’s heated garage. One day, a friend asked if he could bring someone over—a man we’ll call “Joe.”
Joe arrived not alone, but with three pit bulls in tow. All three dogs appeared alarmingly undernourished, with suspicious scratches marring their bodies. Joe explained that he was going on vacation and couldn’t take one of the dogs, a female named Asia Lynn, with him. He asked if my boyfriend could look after her.
Being devoted animal lovers, we readily agreed to babysit Asia Lynn. However, after dropping her off, Joe never returned to reclaim her.
The situation quickly escalated. My boyfriend’s mother, upon discovering the arrangement, was furious and initially kicked him out of the garage. It didn’t take long, though, for her to realize the seriousness of Asia Lynn’s condition and the likelihood that she had escaped an abusive situation. She welcomed both her son and Asia Lynn back into her home.
It has taken nearly three years of consistent care, but today, Asia Lynn is thriving. With food available to her at all times, she has finally gained healthy weight, proudly sporting a little extra fat around her tummy.
We often take bike rides together, spreading joy throughout our town. Wherever she goes, Asia Lynn captures hearts with her impeccable manners and calm, gentle nature—a testament to her resilience and the healing power of a loving home.
