Richmond Park, Epping Forest, and Hampstead Heath have been named the best places in London to walk your dog, according to new research by Rover.com.
The survey crowned Richmond Park the capital’s top dog-walking destination, earning 41% of the vote. Epping Forest and Hampstead Heath followed with 20% and 16% respectively, praised for their scenic views, dog-friendly trails, and proximity to pubs and picnic spots.
Richmond Park’s vast open spaces and natural beauty helped it secure its place at the top, while Epping Forest’s sprawling woodlands and Hampstead Heath’s rolling hills continue to be firm favourites, particularly among North London’s dog owners.
The research also highlighted that 84% of dog owners consider a long walk a staple tradition during bank holidays, with nearly half (48%) treating it as a special day out. However, 77% admitted they and their pets are growing tired of repeating the same routes daily.
Commenting on the findings, Rover’s canine behaviourist Adem Fehmi shared tips for keeping walks fresh and beneficial for dogs’ wellbeing.
“To get the most out of dog walks, treat them like mini workouts – with a warm-up, a main activity, and a cool down,” Fehmi said. “For a healthy adult dog, this could mean starting with a brisk walk, adding an engaging game like fetch, and finishing with some relaxed socialising or a slower stroll.”
Fehmi also advised owners to factor in their dogs’ breed, energy levels, and personality when planning walks. Incorporating natural instincts into routes and activities, and using treats or favourite toys for motivation, can help maintain focus and prevent boredom.
“When picking a walking spot, seek out dog-friendly routes with varied terrain and minimal hazards,” Fehmi added. “Always respect local rules, especially around wildlife, and keep dogs on leads where necessary.”
With their rich landscapes and inviting amenities, Richmond Park, Epping Forest, and Hampstead Heath stand out as the perfect spots for both dogs and their owners to explore and enjoy.
