Over 80 Dogs Rescued from ‘Squalid’ Conditions in Doncaster

More than 80 dogs, along with two cats and a chicken, have been rescued from appalling conditions inside a derelict house in Tickhill, authorities said.

South Yorkshire Police and the RSPCA entered the property earlier today, where they found the animals living amid “faeces and filth.” According to the force, 78 of the dogs were springer spaniels, accompanied by four other dogs of different breeds.

The animals have been moved to kennels for care, and an investigation is underway to identify and prosecute those responsible.

A police spokesperson described the scene inside the house as overwhelming. “When the team entered, they were immediately taken aback by the stench, the squalor, and the sheer number of animals crammed into the property,” they said. “Every corner and every room revealed more dogs living in appalling conditions.”

Chief Inspector Emma Cheney praised the swift collaboration between police, the RSPCA, and Doncaster Council, which led to the operation.

“Thanks to effective teamwork and strong partnerships, we were able to act on community intelligence and secure an emergency warrant from the courts,” Cheney said. “This was not responsible dog ownership — it was cruelty. I’m proud we intervened and that these dogs now have a chance at the life and care they deserve.”

The rescue operation has been widely commended as a vital step in protecting animal welfare and bringing those responsible for the neglect to justice.
