One popular approach involves hiding the pill in a piece of ham or cheese. Soft foods like these serve as a distraction, allowing dogs to consume the medication unknowingly while enjoying a tasty treat. If this doesn’t work, Dr. VetiCan suggests using snacks like crisps, though she cautions that the salt content in crisps isn’t ideal for dogs.
For a more effective trick, Dr. VetiCan recommends “accidentally” dropping the pill-laden treat on the floor. Seeing something “forbidden” fall can prompt the dog to quickly grab and swallow the treat, including the hidden medication. This method makes the experience effortless and less stressful for both the pet and its owner.
In cases where these tricks fail, Dr. VetiCan advises the traditional method of placing the pill directly into the dog’s mouth. This involves gently closing the pet’s muzzle and massaging its throat until it swallows.
For pets that are particularly difficult, a liquid form of the medication can be a good alternative. Crushing the pill and diluting it in water, then using a syringe to administer it to the dog’s mouth, is another practical option.
