Top 3 Dog Breeds Dominating 2025: French Bulldogs, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers

by Doreen Miller

As dog ownership continues to surge in the United States, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, a new study reveals the three most popular dog breeds of 2025.

The American Kennel Club’s latest report highlights the growing love for dogs, with nearly 60 million households now owning a dog—almost double the number from the early 1990s. The increased demand for pets is largely attributed to remote work trends and a desire for companionship.

Among the breeds capturing Americans’ hearts, the French bulldog claims the top spot. Despite its well-known health challenges, the breed’s compact size and affectionate nature make it a perfect companion for apartment dwellers.

In second place is the Labrador retriever, known for its loyalty and intelligence. Originally bred as a fisherman’s assistant and duck retriever, the Labrador has cemented its place as a beloved family dog across the U.S.

Rounding out the top three is the iconic golden retriever. With its sunny disposition and popularity in media, the golden retriever is often seen as the quintessential American dog, endearing itself to families with its easygoing temperament and boundless energy.

These rankings reflect a significant shift in pet ownership trends, with smaller breeds like the French bulldog gaining ground alongside traditional favorites like Labradors and golden retrievers.
