Dog ownership has become a significant part of urban life, but a growing sense of entitlement among some pet owners is putting public safety at risk. While many owners respect rules and regulations, others believe they have the right to take their dogs anywhere, regardless of rules that are in place to ensure safety.
A recent incident at a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City highlighted this entitlement. A young woman, holding her dog, confronted the restaurant owner after being told pets were not allowed. She dismissively referred to the restaurant owner as “that thing” and made disrespectful comments about the rule. This behavior was not only inappropriate but also displayed a lack of respect for public spaces and other people.
More concerning, however, are the cases where dog owners act recklessly. On Nguyen Hue Walking Street, a 26-year-old man was walking his dog without a leash or muzzle in a restricted area. When a security guard informed him of the rules, the man responded aggressively, attacked the guard, and caused serious injuries, requiring hospitalization. In another instance in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, an unmuzzled dog approached a child, and when the child’s father tried to protect his child, the dog owner physically attacked him, causing significant injury.
These incidents reveal a troubling trend: Some dog owners prioritize their pets’ freedom over the safety of others. Dogs, even friendly ones, can still become aggressive in unexpected situations, particularly if they are not leashed or muzzled. The failure to follow leash laws not only endangers others but can also harm the animals themselves.
While dog ownership is a personal choice, ensuring public safety is a shared responsibility. Dog owners who ignore rules and react violently when confronted are not only violating public safety laws but also displaying a complete disregard for others’ well-being. Without stricter enforcement of regulations, these dangerous incidents will continue to occur.
Authorities must take action and impose harsher penalties for those who endanger others by flouting leash laws. Until then, responsible dog ownership should remain a priority for the safety of all.
