Deputy Rescues Dog Tethered Outside a House on Fire

by Doreen Miller

A deputy’s swift actions saved a Michigan family’s dog from potential danger after a house fire broke out in Macomb Township. The incident occurred on February 17 at around 12:39 p.m. when the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fire at a home on Brentwood Street.

The 911 caller reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the basement near a gas dryer. Prior to making the call, the caller had placed the family dog outside on a tether and ensured no one else was inside the house.

Upon arrival, deputies quickly secured the homeowner in a patrol car for safety. Deputy Eric McCombs, learning that the dog was still tethered outside, grabbed a leash from his patrol car. He rushed to the side of the house, called to the dog, and swiftly looped the leash around its collar, unhooking the canine from the tether.

McCombs then quickly escorted the dog to safety, securing it in the patrol vehicle alongside the homeowner.

“The outstanding communication by Dispatch and the quick actions of the MCSO Deputies on scene ensured the safety of the two residents of the home and the family dog,” the report stated.

While the fire caused significant damage to the home, the quick thinking and teamwork of the responders ensured no one was harmed, including the family pet.
