A 2-year-old Bichon Frise named Scottie is recovering at a shelter after being discarded in a dumpster in Old Bridge, New Jersey, where he spent 11 hours in freezing temperatures. The dog was discovered by a maintenance worker at the Glenwood apartment complex on Tuesday after emerging from the dumpster.

The incident occurred when security cameras captured a 26-year-old man walking with Scottie under his arm and heading toward the dumpster. The man then discarded the dog among the garbage bags in sub-zero temperatures. The maintenance worker, who saw Scottie poke his head out of the dumpster, took action and rescued him.

Old Bridge police have gathered evidence with the help of local residents and apartment management. Detective Jessica Nierodzik confirmed that the community has been cooperative and expressed disgust at the act, especially in a complex filled with pet owners. Many locals, including Daniel Vaysberg, voiced their shock at the heartless act, pointing out the many available resources for caring for pets.

A woman whose video helped identify the suspect is now calling for his immediate eviction. The man has been charged with animal neglect and abandonment, while Scottie is receiving love and care from local residents. Old Bridge Mayor Elenaor Walker shared that there have been numerous calls from people offering to adopt Scottie, showcasing the community’s support for the dog.
