A bald dog who struggled to find a home due to his rare skin allergy has finally been adopted after spending more than a year in kennels.
Patch, a boxer breed, suffers from an allergy to dust mites and birch pollen, leading to severe hair loss and discomfort. His previous owners, unable to afford the treatments required, surrendered him to the RSPCA’s Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford, and District Branch. Over the course of six months, RSPCA staff worked diligently to alleviate Patch’s symptoms and improve his condition.
After hearing about Patch’s plight, Simon Mullins visited the dog several times to ensure he could provide the care needed. After 373 days at the shelter, Mullins officially adopted Patch and brought him into his home.
To raise awareness about Patch’s skin condition, Mullins created a dedicated social media page. Reflecting on Patch’s adjustment to his new environment, Mullins shared, “Considering one of his allergies is dust, he is doing very well. No home is dust-free, and I was concerned about how he’d cope, but so far, so good.”
He continued, “His skin is now incredibly soft, like a baby’s skin. While I hope he grows more fur, I secretly love my bald pooch just as he is.”
RSPCA centre manager Claire Kendall expressed the team’s joy, saying, “When Patch arrived, his skin condition was in terrible shape. It was a long journey, but after 373 days, his new owners came forward after seeing him online. We were all emotional when he left—it’s wonderful to see him thriving.”
The staff continues to follow Patch’s progress on social media, where they are delighted to see how well he is adjusting to his new life.
