A veterinary nurse has sounded the alarm on a popular dog activity, urging pet owners to reconsider the seemingly harmless game of fetch with sticks.
Jade, a vet nurse, posted a warning on TikTok explaining the serious risks involved when using sticks as fetch toys. What might appear as a simple, fun activity could quickly escalate into a life-threatening situation for dogs.
Sticks, Jade explained, can cause significant harm. When thrown, a stick may spin and land with one end sticking up, which presents a dangerous scenario when a dog retrieves it at high speed. “If your dog grabs it, the sharp end can impale their mouth and penetrate the roof of their mouth, potentially reaching the brain, which can be fatal,” she said.
Additionally, Jade highlighted other dangers such as injuries to the mouth, tongue, and even internal damage. Sticks can splinter, causing shards to lodge in the dog’s esophagus or intestines, often requiring surgery to remove. Given these serious risks, she firmly advises against using sticks in play.
Jade’s warning is echoed by Dr. Katrina Warren, who has shared similar concerns about the dangers of sticks in past writings. According to Dr. Warren, any veterinarian can recount a terrifying injury caused by a stick.
To avoid such risks, Dr. Warren recommends opting for safer, purpose-made toys designed for fetching, such as dog sticks crafted from non-harmful materials. Moreover, teaching dogs commands like “leave it” or “drop it” can help mitigate risks when playing outdoors.
For dog owners seeking safer alternatives, the message is clear: sticks are a hazard, and proper toys should be prioritized.
