Meet Merida, a fox red Labrador who is now on her way to becoming a certified therapy dog, after overcoming anxiety and transforming into a beloved companion to her owner’s co-workers.
Merida’s journey began when Steve Leggett from Suffolk took her in as a rescue dog, adopting her from a home where she had not been properly trained or socialized. Despite these challenges, Steve was determined to give Merida a chance at a happier life.
In 2023, Steve made a life-changing decision to bring Merida to his work sites. As a construction worker, he saw the opportunity for Merida to build confidence while bringing joy to his colleagues. Her transformation was nothing short of amazing, and Merida quickly became a source of comfort and companionship to everyone she met on site.
“I could see that there was something in her that needed to be brought out, and I fell in love with her,” said Steve. “She became the perfect worksite companion.”
Steve’s employer, Holmes Plant & Construction, and his colleague, Neil Pryke from SEH French, supported the idea, offering Merida a space on site, including a specially designed pen. This support allowed Merida to thrive in her new environment, while Steve continued to witness the positive impact she had on people.
Despite being diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes in August, Merida underwent successful surgery and made a swift recovery, returning to work a few months later.
Inspired by her progress and the happiness she brought to others, Steve decided to train Merida as a therapy dog. “I just love her to bits,” he shared. “She’s fun, loving, and has this amazing work mode. She’s just incredible. Amazing doesn’t even sum her up.”
Merida’s therapy dog training is being sponsored by SEH French and Holmes Plant & Construction, and her journey has brought new joy and purpose to Steve’s life.
