Woman and Dog Rescued After Three-Hour Cliff Ordeal in Dunedin

by Doreen Miller

A woman and her dog were safely rescued after becoming stranded on a cliff ledge in Dunedin on Sunday evening, following a coordinated three-hour operation.

Emergency services were alerted around 5:45pm to the incident on Cliffs Road, between Norfolk Street and Lyders Road. According to police, the woman had become trapped while attempting to reach the dog. Both were perched on a ledge, stable and not at immediate risk of falling, but unable to climb back to safety on their own.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand led the complex rescue effort, working alongside police, Land Search and Rescue teams, Hato Hone St John paramedics, and a helicopter crew. A specialist lines rescue unit was deployed to reach the stranded pair.

By 8:50pm, the woman and her dog were successfully brought back to the top by the rescue team. Authorities confirmed that neither the woman nor the dog sustained any injuries during the ordeal.
