George Washington’s passion for dogs is well-known, and now dog lovers can experience this piece of history firsthand by taking part in special dog tours at Mount Vernon Estate. These monthly tours, lasting 1.25 miles, explore the role of dogs at the estate, from Washington’s beloved pets to the dogs living there today.
Participants will visit five historic locations, including the west gate—an area not typically open to the public—and learn about Washington’s unique dog names and his efforts to improve the quality of his hunting dogs through selective breeding.
The remaining tours for 2025 are scheduled for April 26, May 17, September 6, September 27, and October 4, all at 9:30 a.m. The cost of the tour is $10, in addition to general admission, and visitors must purchase a grounds pass for entry.
Washington’s love for dogs continues to be celebrated at Mount Vernon, where visitors can bring their own leashed dogs (except in certain areas) and explore the estate alongside their furry companions.
