Sanford Promotes Dog Safety Tips for Kids During Prevention Week

by Doreen Miller

In recognition of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, Sanford Health is urging families to teach children safe practices around dogs to help reduce the risk of bites and injuries.

Central to Sanford’s message is the importance of educating children to recognize canine body language and to always seek permission from a dog’s owner before approaching or attempting to pet an unfamiliar animal.

“A dog that is backing away, licking its lips, or widening its eyes may be showing signs of discomfort,” explained Trisha Baker, a child passenger safety technician with Sanford Health. “If you notice these behaviors, it’s best to give the dog space rather than trying to pet it.”

Baker emphasized that even small precautions — like keeping petting sessions brief — can help prevent uncomfortable interactions from escalating. She compared respectful dog interactions to social etiquette among people.

“When we shake someone’s hand, we don’t hold on forever — that would feel awkward and uncomfortable,” Baker said. “Similarly, just a couple of scratches, then stepping back and observing the dog’s behavior, is a safer approach.”

In the event of a dog bite, Baker advises remaining calm, applying firm pressure to the wound to control bleeding, and immediately asking the dog’s owner about the animal’s vaccination status. Depending on the injury’s severity, medical attention may be necessary.

Through these simple yet crucial lessons, Sanford Health hopes to empower children — and their families — to interact safely with dogs, helping to prevent bites before they happen.
