In a miraculous turn of events, a local livestock guardian dog named Buford has been credited with saving a 2-year-old boy who went missing from his home in Seligman, Arizona, on April 14. The toddler, who was only dressed in a tank top and pajama pants, wandered off and spent the night in the wilderness. Despite an extensive overnight search involving over 40 rescuers and helicopters, Buford, a Pyrenees mix, found the child and guided him back to safety.
The boy, who had ventured seven miles from home, was found at Scottie Dunton’s cattle ranch, where Buford is typically stationed to protect livestock from predators such as coyotes, mountain lions, and snakes. Though the toddler had spent hours alone in a potentially dangerous environment, he was remarkably unharmed, suffering only minor scratches and dehydration.
Dunton, who owns the ranch, was astounded by the toddler’s resilience. When asked about his journey, the boy shared that he had stopped to rest under a tree during his trek. This resting spot was likely where Buford found him before the two began their long walk back. Upon retracing their steps, Dunton confirmed that the duo had traveled together for at least a mile.
