Emaciated Dog Found Wandering Near Richmond Secondary School

by Doreen Miller

On April 2, 2025, a jogger discovered a severely emaciated dog near McNair Secondary School in Richmond. The dog, a Pitbull-English bulldog mix, appeared to be in distress and was found wandering alone, with no owner in sight.

According to the BC SPCA, the jogger first noticed the dog trailing behind him during his run. Initially thinking the dog might belong to someone, the jogger stopped, only to find the dog staring at him in a state of exhaustion. Concerned for the animal, the jogger coaxed the dog into his car and, while waiting for the SPCA to open, bought the dog some rotisserie chicken and a collar to provide some immediate comfort.

Upon evaluation, the BC SPCA found the dog had no identification or microchip. It was also revealed that the dog had not only suffered from starvation but also had arthritis in its front legs. The dog is now receiving care at a foster home, under the supervision of the BC SPCA. The animal is getting veterinary treatment, but despite the attention and care, it is still not gaining weight as quickly as expected.

While the dog is not yet out of danger, the BC SPCA has noted its affectionate nature, and the foster family has reported that it is loving and responsive. Despite its severe condition, the dog is showing signs of improvement and is surrounded by a supportive environment.

At this time, it remains uncertain when the dog will be ready for adoption, as it continues to recover. The BC SPCA urges anyone with information about the dog’s background to come forward. The dog’s situation highlights the ongoing issue of pet abandonment and the importance of animal welfare in communities.
