RSPCA’s ‘Thinnest Dog’ Ready for Forever Home

by Doreen Miller

Peanut’s story began on New Year’s Day, when she was found abandoned on a country lane in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Weighing only 12kg (26.5lb)—about half the weight she should have been—Peanut was in critical condition, collapsing from starvation and exhaustion. The RSPCA’s Block Fen centre in Cambridgeshire took her in, where her journey to recovery began.

At the time, she had visible pressure sores on her legs, and her body was so emaciated that her bones were clearly visible. RSPCA staff described her as incredibly emaciated, and experts feared she might not survive another cold night.

A Recovery to Remember

Under the care of the RSPCA team, Peanut gained strength, receiving the veterinary treatment she so desperately needed. After weeks of care, she now weighs a healthier 19kg (42lb).

Tiffany Saunders, kennel supervisor at the Block Fen centre, reflected on Peanut’s transformation: “She’s probably never experienced a very nice life… probably her whole life.”

While initially a scared and shut-down dog, Peanut’s behavior began to change as her health improved. She has blossomed into a loving, friendly dog with a cheeky and playful personality—traits that have warmed the hearts of everyone involved in her recovery.

High Demand for Peanut

Peanut’s rescue story has captured the hearts of many. Following the RSPCA’s initial appeal for help, the charity was inundated with phone calls, emails, and messages from people wanting to adopt her. Despite this overwhelming interest, the RSPCA prioritized her health, ensuring she was fully recovered before making her available for adoption.

Nicola Walker from the RSPCA mentioned that the charity saw a significant rise in animal abandonment cases this year, with January alone reporting 2,000 animals, up a third from the previous year. The ongoing cost-of-living crisis and the impact of the pandemic have created a “perfect storm” for these animals in need.

Looking to the Future

Peanut is now ready for adoption and will soon be listed as available for her forever home at the Block Fen centre. “It’s what we’re here for, so to help with cases like Peanut is so rewarding,” said Saunders, who has been deeply involved in her recovery.

Peanut’s journey from a broken, starving dog to a happy and healthy one is a testament to the power of rescue work and the dedication of the RSPCA volunteers. Peanut is now ready for the love and care she deserves—after years of hardship, she is finally set to find her perfect family.
