The Springfield Fire Department’s Water Rescue team successfully saved a woman and her dog after they fell through the ice on a pond at Lakeshore Apartments in Springfield on Sunday.
According to the Springfield Fire Department, the woman’s terrier puppy ventured onto the icy pond, and concerned about the risk of her dog falling through, the woman attempted to rescue it. In doing so, she too partially fell through the ice.
Captain Marc Becker, leader of the Water Rescue Team, emphasized the importance of leaving such rescues to professionals. “The risk is not worth the reward. We have specialized equipment, including ice suits and sleds, that allow us to safely bring victims to shore,” said Becker.
Springfield Fire’s Water Rescue team was well-prepared, having recently completed their monthly training. “Whenever cold weather hits and ice forms, we train on the ice to ensure we’re ready for anything,” Becker added.
After the 911 call was made, multiple fire stations responded, and the Water Rescue team worked together to pull the woman and her dog from the ice. Fire Chief Ben Houston noted the critical role of specialized equipment in these rescues. “Without it, the risk to anyone entering the water is extreme,” he said.
The woman’s core temperature had dropped, but she was quickly warmed and taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to Battalion Chief Christopher Roush.
Springfield Fire officials are also warning the public about the dangers of walking on ice. “While the surface may appear solid, it can be deceptive. Falling through ice into cold water is a serious and potentially life-threatening situation,” said Fire Chief David Pennington.
The rescue serves as a reminder to avoid venturing onto ice-covered surfaces during winter, where the risks can be severe and unpredictable.
