Guernsey Police Welcomes New Canine Officer to the Force

by Doreen Miller

Guernsey Police has introduced a new addition to its canine unit: a German Shepherd named Max. After completing an intensive training course in the UK, Max officially earned the title of Police Dog (PD) and is now ready to support the force in various duties.

Max joins PD Guinness, who became part of the police team last year, bringing the total number of active dogs in the unit to five. The two canines are primarily tasked with assisting officers in locating suspects and missing persons, as well as helping to recover lost property. According to Detective Sergeant Adam Miller, the work done by these dogs is essential for ensuring the swift and effective resolution of investigations.

Both Max and Guinness recently participated in a training session at Rue Mainguy, where they demonstrated their skills by locating missing persons, recovering property, and tracking suspects. This training is a crucial part of their ongoing development.

When selecting a new police dog, Inspector Miller emphasized the importance of finding animals with the right temperament. “We seek high-drive dogs that are eager to work and comfortable around new people,” he explained. “A police dog like Max can accomplish tasks that would otherwise require multiple officers, making them an invaluable asset to our team.”

With Max now officially on duty, the Guernsey Police Dog Unit continues to enhance its capabilities, providing critical support to the force and the community.
